Communities connect in the kitchen thanks to RAS Foundation

23 Apr 2019

22 April 2019 A new state-of-the-art kitchen is a dream for many keen community cooks, and the small communities of Nowra East, Narrabri and Guyra, have won just that thanks to a Community Kitchen Grant from the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW Foundation (RASF). The Community Kitchen Grant provides recipients a share of over $30,000 worth of kitchen cabinetry, benchtops and kitchen appliances every year to towns in NSW that successfully demonstrate the benefits a kitchen upgrade would have on the local community. This year the kitchen and appliances have been generously donated by IKEA. The RASF Community Kitchen Grant winners were announced at the Sydney Royal Easter Show (the Show) today. RAS Foundation Executive Officer, Cecilia Logan, said the calibre of entries was high with more than 60 applications from communities across NSW received. "It was tremendously difficult to choose a winner as there are just so many worthy communities," Ms Logan said. "The winning applications demonstrated active, close knit communities able to achieve great things with a fabulous new kitchen. "A key factor was that the kitchen will receive broad use by different community groups and can attract new groups or events, resulting in additional revenue streams for local organisations." Alex McNeilly from the Nowra East Community Garden Kitchen Project Team, Nowra East Public School and Nowra East Community Pride Group is one of the deserving recipients of a Community Kitchen Grant and says it is life changing for the Nowra East community." "This grant and gift enable our community organisation to complete the internal build of our Nowra East community kitchen, it will facilitate lots of new programs including daily community cooking programs, Aboriginal Koori cook-ups, seniors cooking, multicultural cooking, garden to plate cooking and neighbourhood cooking programs," said Alex McNeilly. "Making this available to all of the community supports social cohesion, inclusion and health, and creates a strong resilient neighbourhood kitchen community." said Alex Narrabri and District Pony Club also received $4000 worth of products alongside extra benches and cabinetry while third placed Guyra Show Society took $5000 back to their community to put towards their kitchen. Ms Logan said for many small towns their local hall, social club or Show society are the very heart of the community. "They offer an area to meet, host local events and celebrate the township, and the kitchen is often at the very centre of all this activity, food and cooking bring communities together" she said. "We recognise this and understand the difficulty of raising money for local community projects, and that is where a Community Kitchen Grant can be so helpful." The charitable RAS Foundation (rasf.org.au) encourages educational opportunities and helps build strong, sustainable rural and regional communities through targeted grants and scholarships.
