A Green & Safe Event

Each year the Sydney Royal Easter Show attracts around 900,000 visitors over 14 days and is one of the world’s greatest events. The RAS is leading the way when it comes to developing, implementing and managing sustainable environmental practices for events and venues.

The vision of the RAS is ‘To encourage the sustainable development of agriculture by holding events and competitions that support agricultural excellence and innovation’.

Achieving this vision of sustainability is a major goal, both in terms of growing awareness and importance of sustainable agriculture, and in the managing of environmental issues on-site throughout the event. The RAS has undertaken steps to reduce the demand on natural resources through the implementation of an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and Cleaning and Asset Management Plans.

Earth Hour 2008
The Sydney Royal Easter Show will be going ‘green’ again this year, in an effort
to reduce energy consumption. At 8pm on Saturday 29 March, the Show will be
participating in Earth Hour for the second year running.

Instead of flicking off our lights, the Show will contribute to Earth Hour by
supporting the planting of trees to offset the green house gas emissions resulting
from the Show’s activities.

By participating in this Australian initiative, which has now gone global, the 2008
Show hopes to lead the way in climate-friendly events, and contribute to a cleaner
and brighter future for the generations to come.

Other environmental initiatives

  • Around 4,500 tonnes or 97% of all waste from the 2007 Show was diverted
from landfill by being recycled, reused or turned into Green power.
  • 100 tonnes of cardboard, 20 tonnes of drink cans, PET and glass, 72 tonnes
of green waste (woodchop) are recycled annually.
  • On average over the last three years the Show has diverted 98% of all its
    waste from landfill.
  • 10,800 litres of cooking oil is recycled.
  • Over 70% of Showgoers use public transport instead of cars to get to the
    Show.
  • The Show is once again nominated as one of the Environment Protection
    Authority’s official Green Dates.
A Green Date is a ‘green event’ celebrated
throughout NSW, Australia and the world.
  • The Show’s environmental and recycling program is an educational case
    study
by the Department of Environment and Conservation, highlighting the
    event’s excellence in this area.
  • The RAS was a finalist in the 2003 National Banksia Awards for Business
    Environmental Responsibility & Leadership.
    Renewable Energy: The
purchasing of Green Power for agricultural pavilions supports environmentally
friendly sources including bio and wind power.
  • Green purchasing includes paper products and recycling of office products
and consumables including paper products, printer cartridges, and disused
    computer and mobile phones.
  • Events: An Event Environmental Impact Offset Plan has been established
to assist events at the Showground to minimise greenhouse emissions.
  • Water Conservation: Water is a resource we all share.  76% of used
water at the Show is recycled.
  • Recycling: You too can contribute to a cleaner and more environmentally friendly Show.  There will be colourful recycling stations scattered throughout the ground.  A litter free Show helps ensure a pleasant environment for everyone.  Find a bin or take litter with you.
  • All packaging in our food outlets is made from recyclable materials
  • All permanent, casual staff and contractors receive environmental
awareness training, and education is also offered to catering staff
    and the public.

Sustainable agriculture
The RAS runs a series of educational forums aiming to raise awareness and
increase understanding of the importance of sustainable agriculture. These
agricultural learning programs have set new standards in education on this subject.

Throughout urban and rural Australia, and at the Show, the RAS aims to generate
specific awareness and initiate a greater sense of individual accountability through
education.
